John G.A. Williamson papers, 1810-1853 (bulk 1826-1840).

Official correspondence of John G.A. Williamson in his capacity as consul of the United States at La Guayra, Venezuela, and later as charge d'affaires to Venezuela. Williamson's letters describe U.S. shipping and trade at the port of La Guayra, political developments in Venezuela and Colombia, and Venezuela's independence movement, which was led by José Antonio Páez and culminated in Venezuela's declaration of independence from Colombia in 1830. Included with the correspondence are records describing the cargos and crew of American ships arriving in and departing from La Guayra, official proclamations from Simón Bolívar, excerpts from the newspapers Gaceta de Venezuela and Gaceta del Gobierno describing local events and politics, and documents of the new post-independence Venezuelan government concerning its organization and structure. A separate group of unbound correspondence documents Williamson's attempts to secure a new diplomatic appointment in Tangiers and his later efforts to be appointed charge d'affaires to Venezuela. The papers also include the correspondence of other U.S. diplomatic officials who were posted in Venezuela prior to Williamson's assumption of his duties there and following his death.
